AI Has a Nose: The Future of Scent is Digital
The world ofAI is expanding its senses, and now, it can smell. A startup called Osmohas achieved the seemingly impossible: digitizing and recreating scents using artificial intelligence. This breakthrough opens a new frontier in the world of digital experiences, potentially revolutionizingindustries ranging from healthcare to entertainment.
Osmo’s first success story is the fresh summer plum, a scent that has been digitized and recreated with remarkable accuracy. Theprocess relies entirely on AI, eliminating the need for human intervention. This means that in the future, you could download a perfume just like you download music.
Alex Wiltschko, CEO and co-founder of Osmo, was inspiredto digitize smell during his time at Google. This research project blossomed into a full-fledged startup in 2022, backed by Lux Capital and Google Ventures. I’ve always been fascinated by smell. It’s such a powerful emotional sense, yet we know so little about it, Wiltschko told CNBC.
The successful recreation of the plum scent has Wiltschko excited about the possibilities. I’ve been taking this scent around with me everywhere, he shared.
Osmo’s vision for this technology is to improve human health and well-being. Digitized scent could be crucial in healthcare, allowing doctors to trigger memories or alleviate anxiety in patients. Imagine a future where a doctor can use a digital scent to help a patient recall a specific event or even reduce their stress levels.
Beyond healthcare, the possibilities are vast. This technology couldenhance the immersive experience of VR games and movies, adding a new layer of realism. Imagine stepping into a virtual world and actually smelling the forest air or the aroma of freshly baked bread.
The potential applications of this groundbreaking technology are only beginning to be explored. As AI continues to learn and evolve, the future of scentis undoubtedly digital. We are on the cusp of a world where the olfactory experience can be shared, recreated, and even manipulated, opening up a whole new dimension of human interaction with the world around us.
