New Delhi, India – An Indian Air Force(IAF) MiG-29UPG fighter jet crashed in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, November 4, 2024, with the pilotejecting safely. The incident marks the second MiG-29 crash for the IAF in less than two months, raising concerns about the reliability of the aging aircraft.

According to a statement released by the IAF, the MiG-29 encountered a system malfunction during a routine training sortie near Agra. The pilot, displaying remarkable skill and composure, managed to steer the aircraft away from populated areas before ejecting. The jet crashed in an open field and caught fire.

The aircraft was on a routine training sortie when it encountered a system malfunction, the IAF statement said. The pilot, displaying exemplary airmanship, managed to steer the aircraft away frompopulated areas and ejected safely.

The IAF has initiated a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash. The incident comes just two months after another MiG-29 crashed in Rajasthan during a night training mission on September 4, 2024. The pilot in that incident also ejected safely.

TheMiG-29UPG, a modernized version of the original MiG-29, is equipped with advanced features such as the Zhuk-ME radar, upgraded avionics, and enhanced RD-33 turbofan engines. The aircraft has been a mainstay of the IAF fleet since the 1980s,but its age and increasing maintenance requirements have raised concerns about its long-term viability.

The recent crashes have prompted calls for a comprehensive review of the IAF’s MiG-29 fleet. Experts have pointed to the need for a robust maintenance program, including regular inspections and upgrades, to ensure the safety of the aircraft.

The IAF needs to take a serious look at the age and maintenance of its MiG-29 fleet, said Air Marshal (Retd) P.K. Barbora, a former IAF commander. The recent crashes are a clear indication that the aircraft are nearing the end of their service lifeand need to be replaced or upgraded.

The IAF is currently in the process of acquiring new fighter jets, including the Rafale and Tejas, to replace its aging fleet. However, the procurement process is time-consuming and the IAF will continue to rely on its existing aircraft for several years to come.

Thecrashes have also raised questions about the IAF’s training procedures and the safety of its pilots. While the pilots in both incidents managed to eject safely, the fact that two crashes occurred in such a short period of time is a cause for concern.

The IAF needs to ensure that its pilots are adequately trained and equippedto handle emergencies, said Dr. S.P. Singh, a defense analyst. The recent crashes highlight the need for a comprehensive review of the IAF’s training program.

The IAF has assured the public that it is committed to ensuring the safety of its pilots and aircraft. The investigation into the latestcrash is ongoing and the IAF is expected to release its findings in due course.
