Microsoft’s AI Vice President, Phi-Series Leader Bubeck, Joins OpenAIin Pursuit of AGI

Microsoft’s top AI talent is leaving the company, and some are joining the recently troubled OpenAI. Today, according to The Information, Sebastien Bubeck, Microsoft’s Vice President of Artificial Intelligence and Distinguished Scientist, willbe leaving Microsoft to join OpenAI.

Bubeck joined Microsoft in July 2014, according to his LinkedIn profile, and held various rolesincluding Researcher, Senior Researcher, Principal Researcher, Partner Research Manager, Vice President of GenAI Research, and finally, Vice President of AI and Distinguished Scientist.

A Microsoft spokesperson stated in a statement, Sebastien Bubeck has decidedto leave Microsoft to continue his work on the development of AGI. We are grateful for Bubeck’s contributions to Microsoft and look forward to maintaining a collaborative relationship through his work at OpenAI.

At Microsoft, Sebeck led the developmentof the Phi series of small language models (SLMs), including Phi-3, of which Phi-3 mini is a 3.8 billion parameter language model trained on 3.3 trillion tokens. Phi-3 mini has achieved excellent performance in academic benchmarks and internal testing. After optimization, Phi-3 mini can bedeployed on mobile phones, and its performance is comparable to Mixtral 8x7B and GPT-3.

Bubeck’s departure highlights the ongoing talent drain from Microsoft to OpenAI, which has been experiencing a wave of departures in recent months. This move further emphasizes the intense competition in the field ofartificial intelligence, particularly in the pursuit of achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

This development raises several questions:

  • What impact will Bubeck’s departure have on Microsoft’s AI research and development?
  • Will OpenAI’s acquisition of top talent accelerate its progress towards AGI?
  • What are the long-term implications of this talent shift for the AI landscape?

These questions are crucial to understanding the future trajectory of AI research and development. As the race to achieve AGI intensifies, the movement of key personnel like Bubeck will continue to shape the landscape of the industry.
