Zheng Qinwen’s Injury Ends China Open Semifinal Dream

Beijing, China– China’s rising tennis star Zheng Qinwen’s journey at theChina Open came to a heartbreaking end on Friday afternoon, as she was forced to withdraw from the semifinal match against experienced Czech player Marketa Vondrousovadue to an injury.

Zheng, 21, had been on a remarkable run, showcasing impressive form throughout the tournament. She had overcome several strong opponents, including Rahimova, Podoroska, Anisimova, and Mihaela Andreea, earning her a place in the top four. Vondrousova, however, proved to be a formidable opponent, having defeated thetournament’s top seed, Aryna Sabalenka, in the quarter-finals.

The match began with both players striving for control in their service games, resulting in a series of holds. Zheng, known for her aggressive style,capitalized on Vondrousova’s second serves, breaking her several times. Vondrousova, however, countered with her strong net play and tactical variations, taking a 3-2 lead.

The turning point came in the sixth game. As Zheng was moving forward, she slipped, injuring her right handdespite managing to save a point. Tears streamed down her face as she lost the game. The match was then halted for medical attention, revealing a scrape on her right hand.

Upon returning to the court, Vondrousova held her serve, extending her lead to 5-2. While Zheng fought back,hitting several aces, Vondrousova ultimately secured the first set 6-3.

The second set saw both players hold their serves initially. However, Zheng’s injury seemed to affect her performance, leading to several unforced errors. Vondrousova capitalized on this, taking a 4-2 lead.Zheng, however, refused to give up, saving several match points and bringing the score to 5-4. Despite her valiant effort, her injured hand prevented her from maintaining her serve, allowing Vondrousova to clinch the set 6-4 and the match 2-0.

This was the thirdencounter between the two players. Their previous two matches, both on clay, had gone to three sets, with each player winning once. Their most recent meeting was in the Palermo final earlier this year, where Zheng emerged victorious.

Prior to the semifinal, Zheng had expressed her respect for Vondrousova’sabilities, acknowledging her strong performance against Sabalenka. Marketa beat Sabalenka, which I didn’t expect, she said. It shows she’s in great form. I’ll give it my all.

Vondrousova, a former world No. 8, has consistentlyperformed well in Grand Slams, reaching the semifinals at the Australian Open and US Open, finishing runner-up at the French Open, and achieving notable results at Wimbledon.

This was Zheng’s first appearance in the China Open semifinals. She had previously reached the quarterfinals of the tournament in 2022.

Zheng’s injury is a significant setback for the young Chinese player, who has shown immense potential in recent years. However, her resilience and determination throughout the tournament have solidified her position as a rising star in the world of women’s tennis.
