China’s Dream: Master Craftsmen – Liu Yong: The Chipat the Heart of the Beidou System

A tiny chip, no bigger than afingernail, holds the key to China’s ambitious Beidou navigation system. This remarkable piece of technology, the brainchild of Liu Yong and his team, is a testamentto the ingenuity and dedication of China’s master craftsmen.

Liu Yong, a senior algorithm designer and engineer at Jinwei Integrated Circuit Co., Ltd. (Jinwei IC), is the architect behind the Dolphin Series, a groundbreaking high-performance 14-nanometer Beidou III chip. This chip has revolutionized China’s satellite navigation + integrated circuit field, playing a crucialrole in sectors like agriculture, water conservancy, civil aviation, and intelligent driving.

From Humble Beginnings to Global Impact

The journey to develop this groundbreaking chip was a testament to Liu Yong’s unwavering commitment. In 2018, he returned to his hometown of Hunan, leaving behind a promising career in Beijing, to dedicate himself to the development of Beidou navigation chips. At the time, the team was small, with less than 20 members, but their passion was immense.

Our mission was to break through theforeign monopoly on positioning chips and develop a Beidou chip with independent intellectual property rights, no matter how much time and effort it took, Liu Yong recalls.

The Challenges and Triumphs of Innovation

The team faced immense pressure. The tiny chip, with its billions of transistors, demanded meticulous attention to detail, with even the slightest error potentially jeopardizing the entire project. Liu Yong and his team worked tirelessly, often pushing through the night, fueled by their determination to succeed.

They started with a 55-nanometer chip, then moved to 40-nanometer, and finally achieved a breakthrough with the 22-nanometer chip. After a year and a half of relentless effort, they successfully developed the world’s first 14-nanometer Beidou III high-performance chip.

A Chip that Connects the World

Today, this chip has traversed oceans and soared into space, becoming the heart of China’s Beidou navigation system. It is a symbol of China’s technological prowess and its unwavering pursuit of innovation.

Liu Yong’s story is a powerful reminder that even the smallest of components can have a profound impact on the world. It is a testament to the dedication and ingenuity of China’s mastercraftsmen, who are driving the country towards a brighter future.
