China Open Enters Main Draw, Zheng Qinwen Graces Opening Ceremony
BEIJING, CHINA – The 2024 China Open officially enteredits main draw phase on September 26th, with the opening ceremony taking place at the National Tennis Center. The event attracted 380 athletes from 48 countries and regions, making it one of Asia’s most prestigious and influential international tennis tournaments.
Following three days of qualifying rounds, the main draw commencedwith a star-studded opening ceremony. Former China Open champion, Juan Carlos Ferrero, world number one Jannik Sinner, and Chinese tennis stars Zheng Qinwen and Zhang Zhizhen were among the notable figures present.
The China Open,first held in 2004, has steadily grown in stature and influence over the years, drawing hundreds of thousands of spectators annually. This year, the tournament has undergone further enhancements, with the WTA women’s event expanding to a96-draw Super 1000 tournament. The expansion has resulted in a total of 477 matches scheduled for the event.
Following the opening ceremony, the first night match of the tournament commenced. Chinese player Wang Yafan, who recently made history by reaching the Round of 16 at the US Open, faced American player Caty McNally. Chinese table tennis legend Ma Long served as the coin toss guest for the match.
